A Question ?

What is manga ?

Many of you would wonder what the hell is this manga? Is it those fancy Japanese cartoons or is those those big eyed dudes and beautiful girls? Manga is none of these still all of these....... Confused, eh?

Manga is a form of art originated in Japan. Manga is basically a comic, or to be more precise a Japanese  comic. We do not learn how to draw manga but how to draw the components of a manga- The characters, faces, eyes, etc. But for the sake of convenience we say 'we want to learn to draw manga' .

Drawing is a journey, Every drawing is a journey whose Final destination is same which is different for everyone. Manga is just a path which one can take to reach that destination.

Simple as that, huh?

TIP OF THE DAY !!!!

Do you know what is the most important tool while drawing a sketch  other than pencil and eraser ? ( HINT: It is also the most important thing when you are going on a dinner ). Yes, It is the handkerchief or a napkin. You must be wondering why? Because by keeping your handkerchief or napkin on the drawing and your hand on IT prevents your drawing from getting dirty, Which believe me you wouldn't want after your hours of hard work !

EYES TUTORIAL PART 2-HOW TO DRAW

EYES (FEMALE)

HEROINE TYPE FEMALE EYE
BASIC SHAPE OF FEMALE EYE
  • In the above figure There is a heroine type female eye Because this eye reflects beauty and softness which is the main feature of female heroine eyes. Drawing a female eye is much more complicated then a male eye because female's eyes are more watery and their eyelashes are longer.
  • The basic shape of a female eye is also a hexagon but larger as shown in figure above, So the first step to draw a eye is to draw a hexagon.
  • In next step you draw the iris. The iris of female is much more complicated than that of male. The iris of female covers the whole eye, So the shape of iris is as same as of shape of the eye.
  • The trick to make girl eyes more beautiful is to make more watery. You can see above that in the iris a larger portion is left white. And once again the rest of the eye depends on your creativity. But the point to note is : The eye lashes of girl eyes are longer, The Eyebrows of girl eye is thinner and short, The eyes of female are much larger than of males.

EYES TUTORIAL PART 2-HOW TO DRAW

EYES (MALE)

  • In the above figure you can see that I have drawn a MALE eye. Now can you guess which type of eye is this? Yes, It's a main hero type of eye (Because this eye reflects muscularity and smartness which is the main feature of male hero eyes).
  • As you can see the basic shape of this eye is a hexagon (It has six sides).
THIS IS THE BASIC SHAPE OF A MALE EYE.
  • I First drew the basic shape of the eye shown above with my pencil.
  • Then I made the iris, As simple as that. But you Know where the trick lies? Yes In the iris, Now observe carefully I have drawn almost full iris, It is the main feature of a hero's eye ( BUT ONCE AGAIN YOU ARE FREE TO MAKE YOUR HERO'S EYES AS YOU LIKE, ALL OF THIS LIES ON YOUR CREATIVITY).
THE BASIC SHAPE OF IRIS IN MALE EYE
  • Now you can see I have left a small portion of iris white ( Near point 1 ) This small portion made white almost in all eyes (There are few in which none of such happens we will study about them some time after). The pupil or the black part covers the half of the eye, The rest of the eye lies on your creativity including the pupil. I will post some pics of eyes to help you observe and lean.
  • The next part of the eye is the eyebrow, You remember what thick eyebrows represents? Yes muscularity. ( I know what are you thinking, All these things are connected aren't they ? So it is better to understand them not memorize them). Coming to the point I have made eyebrows thick because our hero is superman type strong !

EYES TUTORIAL PART 1-INTRODUCTION

EYES

Drawing eyes is the most easiest, yet most difficult and important part of a character.

Through eyes we can show almost 45% of the characteristics of our character. Through eyes the Character can be reflected as evil or good, Smart or dumb, Beautiful or ugly, weak or masculine, calm or wild, etc. So, you can obviously see how important it is to learn how to draw eyes. And In this tutorial we will cover all those points needed to perfect the art to draw eyes, So guys pick your pencils and get ready to impress a girl by drawing her eyes !!! (Doesn't work  in case you're a girl)

NOTE :- BY SAYING SMART OR MASCULINE OR BEAUTIFUL EYES I MEAN THAT THESE EYES SHOW SMART OR MASCULINE OR BEAUTIFUL NATURE/TRAITS RESPECTIVELY.
  • Before learning how to draw eyes, we must know how many TYPES of eyes are there-
  • EYES OF MALE
  1. Eyes of Hero. (Mainly covers eyes showing masculine and smart nature)
  2. Eyes of A villain. (Mainly covers Evil eyes)
  3. Eyes of a side hero. (Covers eyes showing Intelligent, beautiful,Smart,Weak, calm nature)

  • EYES OF FEMALE
  1. Eyes of Heroine. (Beautiful, calm Eyes)
  2. Eyes of a female villain. (Smart,Intelligent, types of eyes)
  3. Eyes of a side heroine. (Masculine/,calm,wild,serious types of eyes)

  • Notice the difference between the types of eyes used in main hero and heroine, side hero and heroine, male villain and female villain. The eyes of main hero are masculine and smart while eyes of main heroine are beautiful AND calm. The eyes of Side hero are intelligent, beautiful, smart, weak, calm eyes while side heroine has masculine, calm, wild, serious eyes.
  • We use this information to create characters and further comic books, NOTE--IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO USE EXACTLY THIS INFORMATION. FOR EX- YOU CAN MAKE YOUR MAIN HERO'S EYES  SERIOUS AND CALM TOO OR BEAUTIFUL, IT DEPENDS ON YOUR STORY AND YOUR CHARACTER. This is just a basic layout of the characters. As every story has a strong hero, Beautiful heroine, A computer dude as side hero and a tom boy side heroine.

HOW TO DRAW MANGA FACE (FEMALE)

How to draw manga face (FEMALE)

Steps to draw-

  • The steps to draw a female manga face is as same as drawing male manga face' It only needs little changes.
  • In step 1 you draw a circle as same as we drew before while drawing male face. Here EF and KL are eye-line and center-line Respectively.
  • In step 2 the difference is between the jaw. Here you can see that jaw is not made of two sharp lines but a single curve. A curve is used to make the jaw of female to show softness instead of muscularity. You can also see that this time the chin is a single point K (not like in male where chin is a line) to again show softness.
  • The ears are placed at same place as in males, There is no difference. However there is a major difference in neck, You can see in female the neck is long and thin. This is to show beauty and softness.
  • The figure 3 is very important to understand. Observe that the eyes of the female are comparatively bigger than male eyes, It looks cute and delicate, The mouth of the female is also smaller than that of male, Look that the nose and eyebrows are also smaller. All this is to give a cute and delicate look.
Points to Remember
  • The eyes of female are always bigger than of males to give a cute and sweet look
  • The mouth, Eyebrows, Nose, Face is always smaller than males.
  • The neck of females is thin and long.
  • The eyebrows are made thinner.

HOW TO DRAW A MANGA FACE (MALE)

How to draw manga face (MALE)

Steps to draw ---

  • As you can see I have divide the drawing in 3 simple steps.
  • In the first step, circle is drawn. In this circle eyes and nose will be drawn. The line XY is called center-line. Center-line decides the position of eyes, nose and mouth. It is really important to draw it  correctly. The line EF is called eye-line, eyes are drawn ON the eye-line (as you can see in fig. 3).
  • In step 2, I have given the circle a structure of face. I have extended points E and F down making an acute angle(less than 90degree) with line EF, then From points G and H lines EG and FH has turned a little more Respectively. The lines EG and FH and the turns at Points G and H is important as they together make the basic shape of a jaw, this shape is same everywhere,Even in FEMALE.
  • In figure 2 The chin or line KL is drawn a little wide to give a masculine look to the face (This Line is shortened to a point in female's jaw). We, Could have made it a little short to give the face less masculine or some smart and handsome look.
  • Now, Observe carefully the ears of the face on right and left are drawn between the points E, P and F, Q Respectively. Always remember, The ears are drawn below the eye-line (In this case they are slightly above by my mistake, I'M Really Sorry for that).
  • The neck's thickness and longness can be adjusted according to the character's masculine and intelligent nature Respectively.
  • In the last step I have completed the drawing by drawing eyes, nose, mouth and eyebrows. Observe where have I placed the eyes, They are on the eye-line and at equal distances from center-line(which is very important to produce a good face drawing). Observe I have drawn nose from below the eye-line to the line PQ.

Points to remember -

  • You don't have to draw all these lines and chart etc. while drawing a face, just remember them and practice, You have to draw only Center-line and Eye-line. Other line are just used to make you understand the making of face.
  • Center-line--It is a line which divides the face and the body in two equal parts
  • Eye-line--On this line eyes are drawn.

If you have any questions ask them in the comments. Thank you.

TOOLS TUTORIAL PART 2

Advanced Tools

  • Blue Lead Pencils (These are used in writing a comic, Blue does not show up when printing)
  • PENS - 1.Dip pens--These are traditional Japanese ink pens widely used to draw manga or comics. They consist of two parts, one nib holder and other nib. These are some images of dip pens.

The first image shows some of the nibs used in dip pens. The second image shows nib holders.       Now, these dip pens are difficult to find. But do not worry, The mighty invention of Micron pens has solved this problem.

These are called Micron pens, They are basically of six types based on the size of nib-005,01,02,03,05,08.
All dip pens and micron pens are used to outline characters, speed Effect lines( about which we will learn soon)and for backgrounds.
  • Fine point Markers-Some cartoonists like to use them as they are easy to obtain and handle. They are also used in outlining objects when they need higher highlighting and also to color black.
  • Point brushes-These brushes are a little bit different from regular brushes as they have highly sharp tip with which you draw line as fine as drawn by a 01 micron pen.(some veteran artists use these as substitute of micron pens and fine point markers)

  • Black ink- This is something you won't be able to live without if you are aiming to become an artist.Black India ink is artists first choice but other high quality black ink can also be used.
  • Correction Fluid or White ink- It is as much as important as black ink. It is real life saver when you make a major or minor mistake on the paper.

AND THIS CONCLUDES OUR TOOLS TUTORIAL.
